Diabetes Education

If you have been diagnosed with, have been living with, or have a family member with diabetes, you should be aware that being fully educated on how to self-manage your diabetes is the cornerstone of living a happy and healthier life.  The staff at Boca Raton Regional Hospital’s Diabetes Center is dedicated to providing the most comprehensive diabetes program to empower people with diabetes and their families with support and education. 

The Outpatient Diabetes Self-Management Education Program at Boca Raton Regional Hospital has been recognized by the American Diabetes Association for Quality Self-Management Education.* 

We offer monthly Diabetes Self-Management Classes. Our classes teach both nutritional and diabetes self-management skills and are conducted by a nurse and by a dietitian, both of whom are Certified Diabetes Educators (CDE). The curriculum includes medical information on:

  • General pathophysiology
  • Healthy eating
  • Glucose monitoring
  • Exercise
  • Medications
  • Signs, symptoms and treatment of hypo- and hyperglycemia
  • Chronic complications and how to help prevent and care for these

Topic: DIABETES SELF-MANAGEMENT EDUCATION CLASSES -
Our classes teach both nutritional and diabetes self-management skills and are conducted by a nurse and by a dietitian, both of whom are Certified Diabetes Educators (CDE).
The curriculum includes medical information on:

  • Healthy eating
  • Glucose monitoring
  • Exercise
  • Medications
  • Signs, symptoms and treatment of hypo- and hyperglycemia
  • Chronic complications and how to help prevent and care for these
  • Included is a personalized meal plan and additional information on how to incorporate these changes into your lifestyle


Date/Time: Three programs held per month
Consists of four classes, three hours each for a total of 12 hours of medical and nutritional information to help you better manage your diabetes and have a healthier life
Each session (12 hours total) is comprised of four 3-hour classes:
9:00 a.m. – Noon, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, or
3:00 p.m. – 6 p.m., Mondays

Fee: Program fees do apply; however, the classes are covered by most managed care insurers, Medicare and Medicaid. We would provide an insurance pre-authorization prior to attendance in any class.

Topic: NUTRITION & PRE-DIABETES CLASS -
This class includes a personalized food program for each participant and provides support and additional nutritional information to help each attendee better manage their blood glucose levels.
Date/Time: Once a week for four weeks, 3:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m., Mondays

Topic: DIABETES FOLLOW-UP CLASS -
For people who have already attended the above or any comprehensive Diabetes Self Management program. It is a two hour long, one-year follow-up class that includes updates on glucose monitoring, medications, insulin devices, latest diabetic research initiatives, as well as a review of carbohydrate counting, meal planning and nutrition discoveries for overall improved health. The class is taught by certified diabetes educators, a nurse and a licensed dietitian.

Topic: WEIGHT MANAGEMENT AND HEALTH RISK REDUCTION CLASS -
This class takes a non-diet approach to weight management, focusing more on behaviors and self-awareness. Participants learn how nutrition affects one’s body, health and moods; why one may crave certain foods and feel satisfied longer after others. Attendees will learn how to evaluate body signals for hunger and satiety, begin to identify non-hunger triggers to eat, and develop new behaviors.
