After a national search involving more than a dozen impressive candidates, Louise Morrell, M.D., was appointed as the Medical Director of the Eugene M. & Christine E. Lynn Cancer Institute. Dr. Morrell will assume the position previously held by Philip Smith, M.D., before his retirement.
According to Jerry Fedele, president & CEO, “Dr. Smith’s vision for the Cancer Institute resulted in the development of the 5th largest cancer program in Florida and a facility that is the envy of many academic medical centers. This base is an impressive starting point for an oncology program that will compete with the best programs nationally.”
Jerry pointed out that Dr. Morrell has demonstrated her significant capabilities as both a clinician and leader in the exceptional accomplishments that have been recognized in the Center for Breast Care. “ I know that she will achieve similar success at the Lynn Cancer Institute,” he said.
Dr. Morrell joined Boca Raton Regional Hospital in 1995 as medical director of the Center for Breast Care. She helped to distinguish the Center as the only comprehensive breast center in the region, and established the high-risk and genetic program. She was an integral part of the Hospital’s initiative to expand the Lynn Cancer Institute and build the Sandler Pavilion. She has been a champion for multimodality care and built the breast cancer multimodality clinical program. She is recognized nationally for her role as an educator and spokesperson for breast cancer prevention and genetic testing as well as an advocate for research and development of advances in treatment.
Dr. Morrell received her medical degree from Washington University School of Medicine. She completed her internship and residency at Jewish Hospital and a fellowship in Hematology/Oncology at Barnes Hospital and Jewish Hospital in St. Louis. Prior to joining Boca Raton Regional Hospital, she held the position of assistant professor of medicine within the division of oncology at the University of Miami.
