Genetic Counseling While the cause of most cancer may not be known, there are some cancers that result from an inherited mutation passed from one generation to another. In this circumstance, the family often may have an unusually high number of cancers or unusually young age of cancer. The best understood is the breast cancer ovarian cancer syndrome resulting from the BRCA gene mutation. Another common hereditary cancer is colon cancer either familial polyposis or the Lynch syndrome characterized by young colon cancer, uterine cancer and other cancers. Genetic counseling and a single tube of blood can help identify family members at risk, and more importantly can lead to life saving recommendations for screening and prevention.
