Patient Story

On Saturday, December 7th, more than 300 people gathered at Miami Cancer Institute to mark a major milestone for the world-renowned cancer center, as its proton therapy program recently completed treating its 500th patient.


In October of 2017, Sharon Prolow felt a lump in her breast that turned out to be cancer. Following a double mastectomy in her hometown of Jupiter, Florida, and treatment with the hormone-blocking drug Tamoxifen, the 51-year-old financial planner and mother of two resumed her busy life, confident she had put the experience behind her.

But then the lump came back.

“I was terrified when the cancer returned,” recalled Mrs. Prolow, pictured above with her husband, son and daughter. “I got the call on my 50th birthday last year. I’ll never forget that moment. I had felt that having a double mastectomy would take care of everything, but it didn’t.”


After undergoing treatment for prostate cancer over the past year or so, Mr. Gonzalez, who turned 80 in August, is itching to get back on his bike. In fact, he’s already thinking about an around-the-state ride to help draw awareness to prostate cancer and raise funds for Miami Cancer Institute at Baptist Health South Florida, where he was treated.

Mr. Gonzalez’s prostate cancer was caught in the spring of 2018 during an annual check-up. A PSA level of 25 and a Gleason Score of 9 indicated he was at high risk for cancer. An MRI confirmed the presence of a tumor on his prostate gland that was on the verge of metastasizing into his colon.

What is proton therapy?

Proton therapy is an advanced form of radiation therapy that uses high-energy protons to treat tumors. Unlike traditional radiation therapy, which uses X-rays, proton therapy uses streams of particles called protons to deliver the radiation dose to the cancer cells. Because protons completely stop inside the tumor, the specific radiation dose is delivered solely to the tumor without injuring the surrounding healthy tissue.

Benefits of Proton Therapy

Baptist Health South Florida's Proton Therapy Center treats with the most advanced and highly precise form of proton therapy available. Like a 3D printer, small ͞pencil beams of protons are delivered to the tumor, one layer at a time, until the entire tumor is treated. Pencil beam scanning allows for more complex shaping of the radiation dose to conform to the shape of the tumor as compared to older proton technology. This advanced technology results in reduced dose to surrounding normal tissue adjacent to the tumor.
